AST Market Brief | August 2026

August 2026 made one point increasingly clear across Asia-Pacific tourism: sustainability is being shaped long before a guest checks into a hotel or enters an attraction.

Government policy, cross-border access, AI systems, mobile platforms, destination campaigns, accommodation standards, and food-supply commitments are increasingly determining who travels, where demand concentrates, how tourism is managed, and who captures its value. For business leaders, this shifts sustainability from a property-level communications exercise to a question of destination systems, operating readiness, and market access.

Several of the month’s most consequential developments moved beyond broad intent toward a framework, target, verification process, or management tool.

The key difference is that technology can accelerate demand and bookings, but it supports sustainable tourism only when it also improves visitor dispersal, capacity management, local business participation, mobility choices, biodiversity protection, and public decision-making.
